Considering a condo vs. an apartment in downtown Toronto

I'm new to Toronto and trying to decide between renting a condo or an apartment. I'm looking at Queen West and Trinity Bellwoods, but rent is pretty high—like around $2500 for a one-bedroom. What's the vibe in these neighborhoods? Any advice on whether the condo amenities are worth the extra cost?
