Is renters insurance mandatory for my new apartment in Leslieville?

Hi everyone! I just signed a lease for a cozy one-bedroom in Leslieville, but my landlord is insisting on renters insurance. I'm a bit confused—is it actually mandatory in Ontario? Also, how much should I expect to pay for it? Any recommendations for providers? Thanks!
