How much does public transit influence your neighborhood choice?

I’m moving to Toronto from Vancouver, and I'm realizing how much public transit impacts my options. I’m looking at places near the subway but it’s hard to gauge how far is too far. Anyone found that perfect balance between rent and transit access? Any tips?
