Need advice on rental documentation for a Queen Street apartment

I found a nice 1-bedroom in the Queen Street area for $2,100, but the landlord is asking for an employment letter or recent bank statements. Is this normal procedure in Toronto rentals? I don’t want to miss out on a good place, but I'm also worried about privacy. Any advice would be appreciated!
