Concern About Unfair Key Deposit Practices

I recently rented a place and was shocked by the key deposit fees. I'm worried I might not get my money back if the landlord claims I lost a key. What can I do if the landlord tries to keep my deposit unfairly? This whole situation is quite stressful for me.
