Do I really need renters insurance for my new place in Leslieville?

I'm moving into a new apartment in Leslieville next month, and my landlord is insisting I get renters insurance. Is this really mandatory in Toronto? Also, how much should I expect to pay for it? Any recommendations for affordable providers would be appreciated!
