Is Port Credit a good area for first-time renters?

I'm new to Toronto and considering Port Credit for my first apartment. I've heard mixed reviews; what are the pros and cons of living there? Is it worth the higher rent? Any advice on viewing apartments or what to look for in a lease would be super helpful!
