Does my landlord in Toronto require renters insurance legally?

I'm trying to understand if it's legally mandatory for tenants in Toronto to have renters insurance as my landlord is insisting on it for my lease agreement. Also, how much should I expect to pay for this insurance? Any insights on tenant rights regarding this would be appreciated.
