Downtown Toronto vs. East End Living - Which is right for me?

I'm weighing the pros and cons of renting in Downtown vs. the East End. Does the convenience of Downtown justify the higher rent, or is the more relaxed vibe and affordability of the East End more appealing? Anyone have experiences to share about amenities or vibe differences?
