Is it normal for landlords to ask for bank statements in Toronto?

My landlord is asking for employment letters and bank statements before I can sign the lease. Is this a standard practice in Toronto? What are my rights as a tenant regarding what information I need to provide? I'm concerned about privacy and what they can legally require.
