Lost another rental: someone offered $300 over asking!

I just lost out on another unit because someone offered $300 over asking rent! How is this normal? This competition is insane! It feels like I'm playing a game where the rules keep changing. Is this how it is for everyone, or am I just in a particularly brutal spot? Any advice would be appreciated!
