Horror story: Elevator broke on moving day, chaos ensued!

Worst moving day ever! The elevator in my building broke down just as the movers arrived. We were on the 10th floor and had to haul everything down 10 flights of stairs! We lost so much time and energy. Has anyone else experienced this? Any tips on how to avoid such chaos in the future?
