Survived my move, barely - legal deposit confusion

Worst moving day ever! My landlord asked for an outrageous deposit that was over the legal limit, and I didn't even realize it until the moving truck was packed. I felt so trapped! Anyone else been in this situation? How did you handle your deposit issues?
