Help! Assignment vs Sublet Confusion

I'm trying to figure out the difference between assignment and subletting. If I want to leave my Toronto rental early, which is better to get out of my lease permanently? Do I need my landlord's approval for both options? Honestly, I'm feeling lost with this whole process!
