Lost out on another rental, this is brutal!

Just got outbid again! Someone offered $300 over asking, and I'm wondering how people can afford that. I felt like I was playing a game with no rules and every time I think I have a chance, it slips away. Anyone else facing this crazy competition? What are your strategies to get noticed?
