Lost out again: Someone offered a year upfront!

Just lost another place to someone who offered a year of rent upfront. How is that even possible? It feels like no one can compete unless you're loaded! Anyone else feeling this pressure? What can we do to stand out in this crazy bidding war? This is so stressful!
