Just got outbid again—this is insane!

I lost another place today due to a bidding war. Someone offered $300 over asking! How are people even able to afford that? It feels like I'm in a never-ending game with invisible rules. Is this the new normal in Toronto? Any tips on how to stand out would be appreciated.
