Questions about living space for kids in Toronto rentals

We're looking for a basement rental in Toronto, but I have concerns about safety, window sizes, and moisture issues. Also, are there good schools and playgrounds nearby? I'd love to know about neighborhoods where kids can safely play and families have room to grow.
