Just lost out to someone paying a year in advance!

I just lost another rental application, and this time the landlord mentioned someone offered to pay a year upfront! How is that even possible? I feel like I'm in a never-ending competition where I keep getting outbid. Are others experiencing this absurd level of bidding wars too?
