Is it legal for my landlord to ask for 3 months' rent upfront?

My landlord is asking for three months' rent as a deposit before I move in, on top of the first month's rent. Is this normal or legal? I've never rented before, so I'm feeling a bit lost and concerned this might be sketchy. Should I be worried?
