Feeling uneasy about neighborhood safety - is this typical?

I've been living in my Toronto apartment for a few months, and I'm starting to get nervous about safety at night. I often hear mixed reviews about the area, and some of my neighbors have mentioned bike thefts. Is this a common issue here? Should I be worried about leaving my bike parked outside?
