Need advice on mandatory renters insurance from landlord

My landlord is insisting on renters insurance for my unit as a requirement. I’ve never had to get it before and I'm unsure if it's legally mandatory. Has anyone faced a similar situation? What are typical costs, and what should I look for in a policy? Any insights would be appreciated!
