Landlord asking for excessive upfront deposit, need clarity

I've been asked by my landlord for a deposit that is three times the monthly rent, plus first and last month's rent for a winter lease. This seems excessive based on what I've read about local limits. Has anyone navigated this situation before or know what my rights are?
