Lost another apartment in bidding wars - this is ridiculous!

I just lost my 5th apartment to a cash bidding war where the rent went $300 over asking. The average rent for a 1BR in Toronto is now $2400! How is anyone expected to afford this when a salary of $70k only covers 60% of my income on rent? It feels impossible to find decent housing here.
