Lost another place to bidding war - is this normal?

Just got outbid again! This time, someone offered $300 over asking and I thought that was insane, but it seems like the new normal. How are people even affording to pay so much? I'm starting to feel like I'm playing a game where I don’t know the rules. Anyone else going through this?
