Is renters insurance really mandatory? Need clarity!

I just got a notice from my landlord saying I need to have renters insurance by next month. Is this a legal requirement in Toronto? Also, does anyone know what the usual costs are for this insurance? Just trying to figure out if it’s worth it or if my landlord is just being difficult.
