Why is Toronto housing so expensive compared to other cities?!

I just can't wrap my head around how Toronto's housing prices are skyrocketing while even NYC is cheaper! Seriously, Vancouver has similar issues, but how did we end up here? The price comparison makes no sense! Is this normal that we pay these amounts for such small spaces? Help me understand!
