What's the Difference Between Assignment and Subletting?

I’m really confused about whether I should go for an assignment or a sublet to leave my rental in Toronto. Like, what's the difference? If I want to get out of my lease permanently, is one option better? Also, do I need my landlord's approval for either? Help!
