Is 40 mins too long for a subway commute?

I've been considering a job in downtown Toronto, but I'm currently in the suburbs. I feel like 40 minutes on the subway is already pushing it for me. How do people manage longer commutes? Is it just about the route or the vibe once you get downtown?
