Lost another bidding war – how are people doing this?

Just lost out on a great apartment near the subway again. Someone offered $250 over asking! How are people paying that? It feels like a never-ending game where the rules keep changing. Is this really the norm now for rentals in Toronto? Anyone else feeling the stress? Need advice!
