Lost another rental to bidding wars - how to compete?

I just got outbid again! Someone offered $300 over asking for a place I thought was reasonable. How are others managing to pay these crazy prices? It feels like I'm in a battle where the rules keep changing. Any tips on standing out or should I just give in and offer more? This is so stressful!
