Struggling with landlord references for a new rental?

I'm in the process of applying for a new apartment and I'm facing anxiety over potential negative references from previous landlords. What do I do if my past rental history isn't perfect? I want to be transparent, but I'm worried it might hurt my chances at this great place in Toronto!
