Survived my chaotic moving day, have questions about deposits!

Moving day was a nightmare! The moving company arrived late, and the landlord is now asking for an oddly high deposit. I’ve heard about legal limits, but I’m confused. How much should I really be prepared to pay upfront? Anyone had a similar experience?
