Average 1BR rent hit $2400 - how is anyone affording this?

I can't wrap my head around how the average rent for a 1BR in Toronto has skyrocketed to $2400. My friend’s landlord just renewed her lease at $2600, up from $1800 last year. With my salary of $60k, I'm forced to spend over 60% of my income on rent. Is this the new normal?
